Body building is one of the only activities(or so called sports) that anabolic steroids are legally used. Steroid peptites are molecules that produced naturally by the body and one of the major group is the Testosterone group of steroids. Produced more by male body than females,it predominantly controls the growth of muscle cells in the body.
Anabolic steroids are drugs that have similar effects as Testosterone in the body. They increase protein material within cells especially muscle cells.
Anabolic steroids effect the nucleus of the cells directly where they activate the expression of genes to enable the synthesis of proteins. They also block the effects of the stress hormone Cortisol thereby reducing the recovery time of muscle cells.
Upper regions of the body namely thorax, neck shoulders and upper arms seem to be more affected by anabolic steroids with regards to bulking up.
As one bulks up, one looses flexibility and endurance, therefore, any sport that requires flexibility and skill, use of anabolic steroids will have a detrimental affect on ones ability!
To be a great hockey player, one needs to possess quickness of feet, flexibility, endurance, lightening reflexes and immense mental agility. All of these are affected directly and negatively by steroids.
It is pointless to be able to bulk up and hit a hockey ball a fraction quicker, yet unable to skilfully play all the other aspects of the game of hockey. No enhancing drug out there can claim to improve ones skill level, this requires persistent hard work to develop muscle memory for an acquired skill.
Harmful effects of steroids include enlargement of the heart, such as thickening of the left ventricle, which impairs its contraction and relaxation. Furthermore, the volume of blood pumped by the heart is reduced (due to this enlargement) causing heart failure, arrhythmias and heart attacks.
Psychiatric side effects include aggression, violence and mania. Users may also develop symptoms of dependence and withdrawal.
In adolescents abusing steroids, there is a premature ceasing of the lengthening of the bones resulting on stunted growth. Also, there is increased acne, bodily hair, suppression oh natural sex hormones leading to impaired sperm production and even reduction in size of the reproductive organs.
It's definitely just cosmetic and not worth it.
